  1. Thomas Jefferson                is best known as 
  2. the author of the               Declaration of Independence 
  3. and as third President          of the United States. 
  4. But he was also a               diplomat, an architect, 
  5. a musician, a scientist         and inventor, a strong 
  6. supporter of religious          freedom, and an early 
  7. advocate of public              education. He was 
  8. the founder of the              University of Virginia 
  9. and the greatest                patron of learning 
  10. and the arts in his             generation. Although 
  11. he lived 83 years,              he never ceased to 
  12. be young in spirit.             He was always learning 
  13. something new, always           trying to contribute 
  14. to human progress.              Although renowned 
  15. as a champion of                democracy and friend 
  16. of the common people,           Jefferson was a member 
  17. of a favored class              by birth and training. 
  18. He was born on April            13, 1743, at Shadwell, 
  19. his father's home               in Albemarle County,Virginia, 
  20. then on the edge                of western settlement. 
  21. His father, Peter               Jefferson, was a 
  22. successful landholder           as well as a noted 
  23. explorer. He provided           his son with excellent 
  24. opportunities for               education and left 
  25. him a considerable              estate.
